Gemini AI Now Auto-Summarizes Long Gmail Threads for Easier Reading

For Gmail users, Google is introducing a new feature called Gemini that automatically summarises the contents of emails and conversations.

Google has been gradually adding AI capabilities to Gmail.

Last year, the internet giant introduced Gemini into Gmail, letting users utilise the power of generative AI to receive a condensed version of individual messages or extended threads.

Users had to open the email and tap the “Summarise this email” button that shows beneath the email title, but this was helpful for those who wanted to catch up on a lengthy chat, especially on small-screen devices like smartphones.

On Thursday, May 29, Google did, however, announce that “summaries will be available at the top of the email content for messages where a summary is helpful, such as longer email threads or messages with several replies.”

This implies that wherever Gmail deems it appropriate, it will now automatically provide a summary of the email that Google Gemini generated.

According to Google, Gemini will also adapt dynamically to any changes made to the email exchange.

According to Google, you can use the Gemini sidebar or touch the Summarise this email button if an email or thread does not automatically generate a summary.

This feature appears to be restricted to English at this time and is only compatible with the Gmail apps for iOS and Android.

It may take some time before Gemini begins automatically summarising emails for you, as the tech giant states that the new feature will be made available to everyone gradually over the next few days.

Please take note that this functionality will only be accessible to Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium clients, Google Workspace users, and Google One AI Premium members.

Google is also introducing Gemini summaries in Google Chat’s Home view and a new summary building block in Google Docs as part of the May Workspace feature drop.

Additionally, interactive mind maps—which can assist you in understanding the connections between various concepts—are being added to NotebookLM, the AI-powered research tool.
